Swim For Your Life
Today (August 7th 2026) is National Sea Serpent Day. Today is the perfect day to take a boat ride on Loch Ness and look for Nessie. But if you do not happen to be in Inverness, maybe you could just read about Nessie, or one of the other sea serpents out there. Or if you are really ambitious you can bake some blue cupcakes and put little frosting sea serpents on top or knit a sea serpent sweater. Or maybe you are not as interested in sea serpents as I am. But that just makes no sense. Sea serpents are awesome.
The Loch by Steve Alten
Marine biologist Zachary Wallace almost drown in Loch Ness as a child. As an adult he still has night terrors about it. When his father is on trial for murder he sends for Zachary to come back to Scotland. Now Zachary will have to face his fears and figure out what really happened all those years ago.
I like stories about Nessie and sea monsters in general so I was drawn to this. And I think this is a nice twist on an age old tale. It seems very well researched. There is a lot of history and science woven into the story. Sometimes not as well woven as I would liked. For the most part this is a well paced plot, but when you get several pages of Scottish history it does tend to drag a bit. There is a lot going on here. You have romance, monsters, Knights Templar, secret plots, generations long oaths, life long traumas, reconciliations with family, and more, but it doesn't end up convoluted. Everything fits into the story well. There is an interesting collection of characters for the reader to love and hate. I like the quotes in the beginnings of the chapters from people who say they saw the Loch Ness Monster, they were a nice touch. The ending was satisfying. It was a fun read for me. If you are interested in Nessie, or just like a good sea (well, water) monster story I think it will be a fun read for you too.

Stay Out of the Water
Today (July 14th, 2026) is Shark Awareness Day! So go out there and make sure everyone knows about sharks. But in a good way. Sharks are not evil, just hungry. Unfortunately, there are a lot of movies out there that project a different message. And I have to admit that I like the watch shark attack movies, especially ones where the sharks attack because humans did something stupid first. Like this one.
Toxic Shark starring Kabby Borders
A singles retreat is terrorized by a toxic shark.
This movie is ridiculous. The acting, writing and plot are all not great. You kind of know how this is going to go. You have the self-centered guy who refuses to admit the danger because it will cost him money, the loud mouth complainer who never actually helps, the people there just to get eaten and the ones you know will figure it out and live. And why would a shark want to spray toxins on people before they eat them, or why would the toxins turn people into zombies? I don't know and I don't think the writer did either. But I actually found this entertaining to watch. It was exactly what I expected from the title. It was not as good as some but better than some. If you are watching it you probably know what you are in for and I don't think you will be disappointed. It is a bunch of people running around in not a lot of clothes, screaming and getting eaten, with a new twist I never saw before. If you like B shark movies, this is for you, if you don't why on Earth would you watch something called Toxic Shark?

Beans Are More Than The Musical Fruit
This recipe has cannellini beans in it. This recipe can also be used for National Quinoa Day and National Cabbage Day. Because there is so much good stuff in there. You might want to give it a try for all the vitamins and minerals, and the taste.
(which is not technically not a grain) based recipes. Hopefully they taste good too. And it is a bonus when I have some of the ingredients (like half a head of cabbage that will eventually rot) already. And if it has a mix of ingredients that are good for you, all the better.
I halved the recipe because it was lunch for just my husband and me and I didn't want a bunch of leftovers around until I knew what they would taste like.
Based on the suggested toppings I made a sauce of avocado, Greek plain yogurt and sriracha. I didn't use a recipe or measure anything. I mashed two avocados, added the yogurt and sriracha until I liked the taste. A little salt went in there too. I thought about a touch of lemon juice but decided against it in the end. But if you try you might want that for taste and to stop the browning of the avocado.

Help Save a Life
As someone who donates on a semi regular basis I find the app rather helpful. You can put in a zip code and find the nearest places you can donate and make an appointment right there on the app. It will tell you your blood type (I'm AB+), keep track of how much blood you have donated and tell you when you can safely donate again. You can also fill out your Rapid Pass, which is a bunch of questions that you have to answer before you can give blood. It saves you time when you get there if you have already done this. If you have never donated before, these questions can get
rather personal, but I think you can understand why.
I donate because it makes me feel good to know I'm helping others. But there are
other rewards. The app has virtual badges you can collect to encourage you to come back. Donation centers also have swag sometimes. I have a collection of shirts, but they give out other things sometimes too: sunglasses, socks, backpacks and such. If you have the app you get points for each donation that you can use to get even more swag: hats, tote bags, camp chairs, thermos bottles, or of you are like me -more shirts. And after so many donations you get a milestone pin.

Once in a Blue Moon
Tonight (May 31st 2026) there will be a blue moon. It is a blue moon because it is the second full moon in the same month. A blue moon occurs every two to three years. The phrase 'once in a blue moon' made me think they were much more rare than that. And it is not very likely the moon will actually look blue in color. But you should go out and look at it anyway.
Blue Moon Rising by Simon Green
Rupert is the second son of a king. An extra, unneeded, prince. So to get him out of the way Rupert is sent on a quest. But with the Blue Moon rising and the Darkwood spreading, Rupert must save the kingdom that does not even want him.
Blue Moon Rising is fun to read. It is witty. There is banter, danger, a dragon, a witch, love, demons, spells, betrayal, and much more. The plot moves at a good pace and engages the reader. The story breaks into parts in the middle but all the parts are just as interesting as the others and then they all come together nicely. And there are a lot of good characters. I think it is a good book for lovers of fantasy. I do wish the dragon was in the story more. I liked how things and people weren't what you expected, but it was used so much you were expecting it, which kind of misses the point. I also thought it lost a little something at the end at the last big battle, that was the only time, in this almost 500 page book, that I started to lose interest. If you like fantasy, you should take a look.

That's no fish tale
Today (May 2nd 2026) is World Tuna Day. The record for the most expensive tuna ever sold was a 535 pound bluefin tuna sold for 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million dollars US). That is around $6000 per pound. I do not pay that much for my tuna. In fact, my tuna usually comes in a can from the grocery store. But if you want to celebrate World Tuna Day by eating sashimi from a $6000 a pound tuna, you be you.
I'll stick to my tuna salad.
Like the one from The Pioneer Woman I made for lunch the other day. Why did I pick this Tuna Pasta Salad? Well, as with most recipes I make that have a lot of choices, it is a mix of eliminating a couple I know I don't want for one reason or another, luck, the word easy in the title, and where I am when I get tired of looking. And the picture. I am swayed by the photo often.
I grew up eating tuna pasta salad. I think a lot of people did. It is easy, filling, you can add some veggies to provide some nutrition, and a box of pasta is often cheap.
This pasta salad was not the same as the one I grew up eating but it reminded me of it. Tuna and pasta mixed with mayonnaise and some other stuff probably, I don't know, I was little and that was a long time ago.
You get a nice little crunch for the fresh veggies, just the right among of sweet from the red pepper and the peas, a creamy finish with the mayonnaise and the sour cream and a few herbs and spices to add a little bit of extra flavor.
It is filling but not too heavy. It travels and keeps well. I don't think there are many people who would not like it (except vegans). There are a million different tweaks you could make if you wanted to customize it. I really enjoyed it for lunch. It would also be great for a pot luck, a barbeque or picnic, or just to have as a snack in the fridge. And great to celebrate World Tuna Day is you don't have 3.2 million dollars for a bluefin tuna.

Be Super Today
Today (April 28th) is National Superhero Day! I happen to be a big fan of comic book superheroes. (Batman is my favorite.) But there are much more important heroes, real ones, people you might even know. So, on this very important day - Go hug a firefighter! I mean, ask permission first. Don't be a weirdo about it.
Sometimes all it takes to be a hero is to go out there and do your best and try to always do the right thing, like Super Jumbo.
Super Jumbo by Fred Koehler
Super Jumbo is a superhero, even if no one else can see. it. He is determined to save the day, whether people want him to or not.
First, the illustrations in Super Jumbo are adorable, and make sure you take a good look because a lot of the story telling is done with the illustrations. The story is fun too. Little Jumbo is determined to be Super Jumbo, a superhero who saves the day. He isn't doing it for thanks or praise, which is good, because sometimes he gets it wrong. However, that does not stop Super Jumbo from being a hero. Weather he is stopping traffic to let snails safely cross the street or saving a man's popcorn from the pigeons, he is always there to help those in need. I really like this book. It is a cute funny story about helping others and doing your best. You don't have to be super to be a hero.

It's all about the scales
World Pangolin Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in February, making today (February 21st) World Pangolin Day!
Want to learn more about pangolins? Well, there is a lot of info out there but her are a few facts to get you started:
Pangolins are the most trafficked mammal in the world.
People want pangolins for their meat and for the scales that are used in traditional medicine.
They are the only mammal covered in scales.
The scales are made of keratin, the same stuff as your fingernails.
There are eight species of pangolin, four live in Africa and four live in Asia.
All eight species of pangolin are endangered, raging in status for vulnerable to critically endangered.
Pangolins are insectivores, eating mostly ants and termites.
Pangolins have no teeth.
I think pangolins are cute. They are certainly unique. I think it would be a shame if we lost them.
If you would like to donate to help the pangolin check out these places:
