But... It's Not a Fish

Today (November 3rd 2026) is World Jellyfish Day!  There are over 2000 types of jellyfish and some of them are edible.  I have never eaten jellyfish.  I have to say they do not look delicious to me.  But then neither does a lobster, and I like lobster.  So there is just no telling. But eating jellyfish is just one way to celebrate this glorious day.  You could go to the aquarium and look at jellyfish.  Or read a book.  There are a lot of picture books about jellyfish.

The Jellyfish Bus by Suhyeon Lee

Slowpoke, the jellyfish, is a jellyfish bus but when he gets fired for being too slow he takes the opportunity to travel.  On his trip he encounters all sorts of sea life and maybe finds a place his slow pace is just the right fit.

I like the big, bold, bright illustrations.  It is an oversized book and the large scale helps convey the vastness of the ocean.  I love all the creatures that Slowpoke encounters, all real animals that can be found in the ocean.  And I think that seeing the animals in the book will encourage some readers to explore sea life further.  The story is good too.  At first Slowpoke is sad that he can not be a bus, but then he uses the time to explore other things.  Eventually Slowpoke finds a place where his slow pace is just the right thing.  It is a fun book that can be read over and over.
